The collection contains scrapbooks, correspondence, photographs, artifacts, and clippings spanning Kirkpatrick's political career. The artifacts include various campaign ephemera (1952-1963), along with a Louisiana-shaped plaque honoring his service to the Louisiana Department of Public Works (1964). His wife Edith created the four scrapbooks (1951-1963) of clippings, photographs, and correspondence.

Claude Kirkpatrick was a Louisiana state representative from Jefferson Davis Parish. Kirkpatrick served in the Legislature from 1952 to 1960. Following his stint in the Legislature, Kirkpatrick worked for four years as Director of the Louisiana Department of Public works, ending in 1964. Kirkpatrick was a gubernatorial candidate for the 1964 Louisiana governor's race, running as an "independent democrat."
